Carbon Management
Probably the highest profile environmental service thanks to extensive media coverage and sector development. The Carbon market doubled in size in 2008 from $32bn to $64bn per annum and yet many businesses still know only the basics such as what their Carbon Footprint is or was in the previous year.
That is changing and now businesses want to know what their Carbon Footprint is in real-time and how they are managing the amount of Carbon they are responsible for producing.
the green house offers businesses a fully outsourced Carbon solution which will include business alerts/early warning summaries, benchmarking and prioritisation and emissions and Carbon Reduction Commitment Compliance (CRC)
the green house will then undertake an improvement and implementation strategy to reduce the active footprint a client has.
Improvement – proactive Energy Management and ongoing Carbon Control initiatives including alerts and controls, business process changes, active management of energy through constant monitoring and changing staff behaviour.
Implementation – technology upgrades, proactive maintenance and installing energy efficient devices all deliver measurable benefits. Hardware and technologies covered include air conditioning, heating, lighting, office equipment, building controls and Building Management Systems.
What does it all mean?
The basic mechanics of climate change are well understood; the world is warming, much of the warming is due to human emissions of greenhouse gases, and the changes are set to accelerate in the future, bringing many and varied impacts around the world.
The impacts of even a small increase in temperature are expected to be significant, particularly in certain regions. Effects are expected to include flooding in low-lying coastal areas, Wetter, warmer winters and dryer, hotter summers in the Northern Hemisphere and more extreme weather conditions worldwide (storms, drought, heavy rainfall)
Unless they reduce their carbon emissions, businesses will start paying the price of climate change through:
- more expensive energy supplies and higher insurance premiums.
- a drop in business, with customers looking elsewhere for a more socially responsible supplier.
- a need to start meeting even stricter government regulations and legislation.
Reducing the amount of carbon a business emits is one of the fastest, most effective ways to save money. And it will also help combat climate change by reducing carbon footprint – a positive aspect of CSR aspirations.
The right combination of small changes, many costing nothing, can reduce energy bills by thousands of pounds. This is true for any business regardless of size or sector.
Assessment
Before a strategy can be formulated to achieve savings and reduce emissions a clear understanding is required of where the business sits currently.
the green house will provide consultants to calculate the Carbon Footprint of the client and also the breakdown of how and where emissions occur.
Management
Once the starting point has been established the green house devises a clear strategy for the client to follow. This strategy contains standards and protocols that will help the business achieve its goal of reducing and managing its carbon contributions.
Some solutions will be tangible such as heat, light and power saving strategies whilst others will be synergistic such as education of the workforce to achieve Best Practice.
Maintenance
The implementation of the strategy falls to the business to achieve however the green house will assist in the delivery of the strategy through providing a consultant on a day rate according to the requirements of the clients business.
This may be as little as one day a month or may be as much as one to two day’s per week depending on requirements.
